New computer upgrade: Voice Activated Computers!
Maynard, MA — April 1, 2026 — In a bold step toward the future of library technology, the staff of the Maynard Public Library is proud to announce the launch of its new voice-activated computer system, debuting today.
This upgrade allows patrons to access library computers using simple voice commands. To begin, patrons need only approach a workstation and clearly say, “Computer, start!” Additional commands such as “Open internet,” “Search for books about dinosaurs,” or “Increase font size” will activate a seamless, hands-free experience.
“The library has always been here to make information as accessible as possible,” said Assistant Director Jeremy Robichaud. “With this new system, we’re removing barriers. There's no keyboard needed or mice needed, just your voice.”
The voice system has been carefully “trained” to recognize a wide variety of voices and accents. Staff recommend speaking confidently and projecting clearly for best results. Early testers have reported that repeating commands multiple times may improve responsiveness.
To ensure a quiet and respectful library environment, patrons are encouraged to use their best library voice when interacting with the system.
Library staff will be available throughout the day to assist patrons in learning the new technology and to celebrate this exciting milestone in library innovation.
