Science & More is a fun STEM-based series for kids with different hands-on activities each meeting. For the Fall session, each meeting will use food to explore a variety of STEM concepts.
Science & More! meets every other Monday from 3:30-4:15 pm in the Storytime Room, and kids and students ages 8 and older or in grades 3 through 8 are welcome to sign-up!
October 23: Acids, Bases, & Brown Apples
We will be attempting to keep an apple from turning brown using liquids like milk, lemon juice, vinegar, and more before ranking them on how effective they were. We will then test the pH of each liquid and see if there is any relationship between the pH of a liquid and how well it kept an apple from turning brown.
November 6: Dancing Raisins: Exploring Carbon Dioxide
We will explore Carbon Dioxide in 4 ways! We will watch the creation of carbon dioxide through the always fun baking-soda-&-vinegar mixture, see carbon dioxide as its bubbles rise through soda, making raisins dance as it goes, discover how carbon dioxide reacts with water to create carbonic acid, and watch how alka-seltzer tablets release carbon dioxide gas to create our very own lava lamps!
November 20: Hot Chocolate, Solutes, Solubles, and Solutions
We will put our hot chocolate making skills to the test as we determine how much hot chocolate mix we can dissolve - if it dissolves - in hot water, cold water, and milk, and what works best. We will see if we can separate the hot chocolate mix from the water and milk, and then compare it to other pairings, like salt and water, food coloring and water, and others.
December 4: Marshmallow Building
Put your creativity and engineering skills to the test as we build with marshmallows and toothpicks. We will use several different sizes of marshmallows as we try and follow some blueprints before building our own creations!
Limited to 15 participants each meeting. To register, stop by the Children's Desk or call 978-897-1010 x106. We hope to see you there!
